I recently noticed that my 9 year old Boxer was leaking while asleep. Actually completely relieving herself. She has always been in perfect health and I'm pretty sure that its not a UTI. This has been happening from time to time for about a month and a half. She has an appointment next week but i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem with an older female? She was spayed at her second heat and has never even been a small "leaker". I am not to terribly worried about the symptoms as much as the meds she may have to take. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks

I have seen this in Older dobes and boxers, research shows a correlation between spaying and incontinence, but I agree this does not sound like that, it sounds to me to be related to old age. Estrogen treatment may help, but it is possible that it is just old age catching up to her.

Thanks Steve,Its a sad thing watching one of your "kids"out aging you. So do you know if this treatment works well? And I assume she would have to stay on it for the rest of her life?

This happened to my Gretta, and her kidneys failed shortly after as did her hips, so I had to let her go, but if Estrogen helps, yes it will be a long term thing.

I have a 1 year old red female dobie and she has seemed to have this incontinence since before she was spayed. I noticed as a baby (10 weeks old or so) she would be on my lap and when she got up my lap would be very wet. I would not notice it when it happened, so it is a leak over a period of time. She was spayed at 6 months. I was told by another dobe owner that her vet said to give her dog benedryl and it took care of it, so I tried it and it did not help much. It is totally when she is sleeping. My vet said that it is common with dobes and he didn't really recommend anything. Any suggestions?

In my experience, urinary incontinence is fairly common in spayed females in some breeds...including Dobermans. However, it seems very unusual in a six-month old unspayed puppy, or even a one-year old spayed female. My suggestion would be to seek another veterinarian's exam and opinion to make sure that there isn't some kind of physical problem causing this other than the hormone changes that come with the spaying. Perhaps she has some kind of a malformation in her urinary tract that could be corrected with surgery, for example. I would look for a vet who specializes in urology, if possible. If it is just the more common female incontinence, there is a prescription medication called phenopropanolamine (it has a few brand names including Propan) which is very effective in controlling this problem. It is commonly prescribed by veterinarians. I have personally had several spayed females who have taken this medication and lived long lives without continuing incontinence. I have known many dogs other than mine for whom this is also true. They do continue to take the medication for the rest of their lives to maintain success. Good luck!
